Jacob August Riis

@ Foam Amsterdam

Jacob August Riis was a Danish-American social reformer, "muckraking" journalist and social documentary photographer. He is known for using his photographic and journalistic talents to help the impoverished in New York City; those impoverished New Yorkers were the subject of most of his prolific writings and photography. He endorsed the implementation of "model tenements" in New York with the help of humanitarian Lawrence Veiller. Additionally, as one of the most famous proponents of the newly practicable casual photography, he is considered one of the fathers of photography due to his very early adoption of flash in photography. While living in New York, Riis experienced poverty and became a police reporter writing about the quality of life in the slums. He attempted to alleviate the bad living conditions of poor people by exposing their living conditions to the middle and upper classes. LINK foam

أم كلثوم Umm Kulthum (Oum Kalsoum)

امل حياتي ام كلثوم اغنيه الكاملة

Umm Kulthum is a famous and very popular singer from the Arab world. Kulthum performed throughout the Middle East and once in Paris in 1967. Even 40 years after her death, her albums are still selling better than those of anyone in the Arabic language. Umm Kulthum's singing style and especially her full and deep voice are imitated by many.  LINK أم كلثوم

Dubai project

Concept Alicyn Henning and Dolf Pauw,

Exityourstoryteller was invited to exhibit their work in Dubai. The owners of the Alserkal Cultural Foundation want to think about it to exhibit this work. We researched their Center and have seen that they are specialized in local Arts and Craft. Our work is of another level. So we continue to get our work exhibit at another gallery in Dubai. Five works are finished, the sixth work is about the animal life in Dubai (this workpiece is in progress). Here you see two pieces of work: Compass and Rain. LINK exityourstoryteller

The Egtved Girl

One of the most important Bronze Age burial sites is at the Jutland village of Etved in Denmark. In 1921 a mummy of a girl was uncovered dating from 1370 BCE offering a fascinating insight into the day to day lives of our Bronze Age ancestors. LINK arte

BABA MARTA DAY (the "Martenitsa" Day) - March 1

This Martenitsas are imported by Julia from Plovdiv a few days ago to Rotterdam

March 1st is known as the "Baba Marta" Day in Bulgaria – so, on the very March 1st, as well as the days following, all people give each other red-and-white tokens in the form of strips, ornaments or a pair of small woollen dolls, traditionally called “Pizho” (the male character) and “Penda” (the female one), also known by the name Martenitsas.

Salim Bayri

Surprising during Art Rotterdam
Photo's dolf pauw

Salim Bayri (Casablanca) is an artist graduated from the Escola Massana art school (Barcelona) and currently a Masters degree candidate in Art, Design and Technology at the Frank Mohr Instituut of Groningen (Netherlands). Being born and raised in a crossroad country like Morocco and living in Europe, his work stems from questioning the disparity between self, cultural and national identity. By taking daily life as subject matter, his work is the outcome of examining the different layers of identity labels that supposedly define his persona as a migrant. With a humorous approach, he plays with these labels twisting them and presenting them in a variety of media through performances, drawings, still and moving images. He creates situations in which everyday objects are altered or detached from their natural function. By drawing specific narrative lines, different functions and contexts are created. Salim Bayri is currently the half of BAZOGA music duo. LINK Salim Bayri

J. Howard Miller

We Can Do It! poster
Rosie the Riveter, picture from Geraldine Doyle

Miller studied at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, graduating in 1939. He lived in Pittsburgh during the war. His work came to the attention of the Westinghouse Company (later, the Westinghouse War Production Co-Ordinating Committee), and he was hired to create a series of posters. The posters were sponsored by the company's internal War Production Co-Ordinating Committee, one of the hundreds of labor-management committees organized under the supervision of the national War Production Board. Miller may have based the "We Can Do It!" poster on a United Press International (UPI) a supposedly picture taken of Geraldine Doyle working at a factory in Michigan, but in recent year it was said to be a picture of Naomi Fraley nee Parker in 1942 in California. At the time of the poster's release the name "Rosie" was not associated with the picture; that came after 1982 when the poster was rediscovered in the US National Archives. LINK wikipedia
