Dimitar Genchev

@ IN SIGN
24 march - 27 april Groningen

lada
The paintings of Dimitar Genchev are the result of close observations of daily life in his home country Bulgaria. Simple and commonplace things, like furnished rooms, a day at the beach or meals diners form the subjects of his work. He believes that these seemingly ordinary matters contain a special kind of beauty. By depicting them in unexpected ways, whether through a surprising use of colour, space or angle, he rearranges reality and our perception of it.

Valentin Carron @ la Biennale di Venezia

Curator: Giovanni Carmine

Commissioner: Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia

Valentin Carron will represent Switzerland at the 55th International Art Exhibition - la Biennale di Venezia from 1 June to 24 November 2013 in the Swiss Pavilion in the Giardini della Biennale. His exhibition is complemented by an accompanying talks and events programme titled "Salon Suisse" at the Palazzo Trevisan degli Ulivi.

For Valentin Carron, sculpture is central to his work. The formal vocabulary of his pieces is inspired by the imagery of the Canton of Valais, where he has spent almost all his life, borrowing and adapting the internationally renowned vocabulary of the style of his alpine home region and making it peculiarly his own. Through stylistic and material tensions, his art casts doubt as to the authenticity of the vernacular, whilst developing a highly personal artistic discourse. LINK Swiss Pavilion Venezia

TOMMIER

interactive app with sound

Peter Luining is an Amsterdam based artist, curator and theorist. He studied contemporary philosophy in the mid 80's. After his study he became active in the Amsterdam vj-scene. He started fiddling with computers, and made 3D animations in commercial jobs. He also directed video- clips. Unsatisfied with commercial jobs and his role of only doing images and video with music made by others he started to combine video with his own music. In 1995 the character of his work changes dramatically when he discovers the net and the relative easy way interactivity could be achieved by using webpages. After doing some obscure net performances, Luining first got international recognition with his work "clickclub", which he presented at the Transmediale festival in Berlin. This netpiece distinguished itself from nearly everthing at that time because of the way the user could and could not interact with its sounds and images. Since 1997 Luining's work is turning towards a kind of minimalism, while maintaining his earlier research of the dynamics of the net. An important milestone in his work is BGO MUI*5 (2002), an interactive public artwork for the Dutch Department of Justice. Inspired by the problems he faced by setting up this large public artwork his work starts to become more conceptual which also means that he starts to theorize and write about the use of computers and it's basic material computersoftware.

the "fountain lady"

Ruth Asawa

Ruth Asawa was born in 1926 in Norwalk, California, one of seven children. Her father operated a truck farm until the Japanese American internment during World War II. The family lived in the assembly center at the Santa Anita racetrack for much of 1942, then at Rohwer War Relocation Center in Arkansas. Following graduation from the internment center's high school, she attended Milwaukee State Teachers College, intending to become an art teacher. Unable to get hired for the requisite practice teaching to complete her degree, she left Wisconsin without a degree. (The degree was finally awarded to her in 1998.) From 1946 to 1949, she studied at Black Mountain College with Josef Albers. LINK Ruth Asawa

Primrose - Russion Colour Photography

@ FOAM
25 January - 3 April 2013

The title of the exhibition refers to the primrose flower, used metaphorically here to represent the many colours in which it appears during early spring. Primrose, Russian Colour Photography presents a retrospective of the various attempts in Russia to produce coloured photographic images. This process began in the early 1850s, almost simultaneously with the discovery of the new medium itself.
The colouring technique, based on the traditional methods of craftsmen who added colour into a certain contour design, has determined a whole independent trend in the history of photography in Russia, from 'postcard' landscapes and portraits to Soviet propaganda and reportage photography. LINK FOAM

Angles Mirror, 2013
@ bitforms gallery

The Angles Mirror rejects the idea of building a picture based on relative lightness and darkness. Instead, it explores a system of linear rotation that indicates the direction of an object’s contour. A wall-mounted sculpture, the Angles Mirror is a sharp triangular block of steel, dotted with yellow indicator arms that pivot. Based on the isometric grid, its structure favors the patterns and angles found in an equilateral triangle. The arms, which do not have the ability to change brightness or luminosity, use input from a camera and reconstruct the view with areas of varying angles. The negative space surrounding a viewer is translated into horizontal lines on the picture plane.

Fail Better

@ Hamburger Kunsthalle

 Bas Jan Ader (1942-1975)
 Fall 2, Amsterdam, 1970

"Try again / fail again / fail better," is an inspirational quote by the Irish writer Samuel Beckett. During his visit to Germany around 75 years ago, Beckett made a number of extended visits to the Hamburger Kunsthalle, and now-in keeping with his famous motto-the Kunsthalle is presenting a diverse selection of films and videos on the theme of failure. In works dating from the 1960s to the present day, internationally acclaimed artists explore this complex phenomenon, highlighting not only the playful, amusing and surprising aspects of failure but also its mournful and tragic dimensions.

Joan Fontcuberta

2013 Hasselblad Award Winner

The Hasselblad Foundation is pleased to announce that Catalan photographer Joan Fontcuberta (b. 1955, Barcelona) is the recipient of the 2013 Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography. Joan Fontcuberta is one of the most inventive contemporary photographers, with an over 30-year achievement of constantly investigating and questioning the photographic medium. His work is distinguished by original and playful conceptual approaches that particularly explore photographic conventions, means of representation and claims to truth. He challenges concepts of science and fiction in interdisciplinary projects that extend far beyond the gallery space. In addition to his photographic practice, Joan Fontcuberta's capacities as a writer, teacher and curator have been greatly inspirational to the younger generation. LINK Hasselblad  LINK Fontcuberta

@ Yes Naturally
Gemeentemuseum Den Haag

The exhibition will offer a thrilling tour of the natural world, including both clichéd images of romantic landscapes with waterfalls and the hard and inescapable facts of environmental degradation. It will wake us up to the reality of oil slicks and genetically modified fish, but suggest that solutions to environmental problems can be found if we are prepared to change our habits: through recycling and new kinds of cooperation we can save the planet. Artists will propose new and unconventional approaches. LINK Yes Naturally

Revolutions in Russian painting 1895 - 1917
12 March - 11 August 2013 @ Bonnefantenmuseum

From 12 March to 11 August, the Bonnefantenmuseum is presenting a unique collection of almost 90 paintings from the two most important museums in Russia (the Tretyakov Museum in Moscow and the Russian State Museum in St Petersburg) and from a number of smaller collections. The exhibition illustrates the birth of modern art in Russia, from 1895 to 1917; an exceptional period of continuous innovation and creativity that had a decisive influence on the global development of visual art. The exhibition presents world-famous artists such as Kazimir Malevich and Wassily Kandinsky alongside new discoveries like Ilya Mashkov, Aristarkh Lentulov, Pavel Filonov and Petr Konchalovsky. Most of the paintings have never been seen in the Netherlands before, and some of the works have never even been exhibited outside Russia. LINK bonnefanten

New Landscapes, look much the same as the bucolic traditional works on which they are based - the green mountain and water paintings of the Song Dynasty a thousand years ago. But in Lu's works, those "mountains" are actually some of the heaps of garbage and debris, covered with protective green cloths, found at construction sites across fast-growing China. LINK bruce silverstein
