Melnik Wine

Year 2001

Melnik area is one of the wine regions in Bulgaria. Traditions in cultivating vines here are very old. The beginning was in the middle Ages and with the developing of the town in XVII - XVIII c. they became stronger. Even now, in the old Melnik’s houses cellars could be seen, hewn in the rocks. Mild climate and the great number of sunny days in the year contribute for vine growing. Melnik wine is made of an Old Bulgarian sort of vine- wide-leaf Melnik vine.
It is distinguished with its taste, deep red colour and splendid aroma. The fame of Melnik wine spreads all over the world.

LI JIN

@ Today
9 December 2012 - 6 January  2013
No.32 Baiziwan Road, Chaoyang District
 Beijing

In a world where we are bombarded with sleek bodies and seductive poses, it can be refreshing when someone makes a point of exposing the flawed human figure that we all really are. Li Jin is such an artist. He doesn’t just portray the human form with all its imperfections and blemishes, but he celebrates them.  Relishing in the banal, he focuses on everyday activities such as bathing, eating, reading…or simply doing nothing at all. LINK LI JIN

Edward Hicks

Edward Hicks was a coach and sign painter from an early age.
In middle age he began to produce paintings of farm scenes and landscapes in a naive, or folk, style. Fearing that art was contrary to his Quaker religion but believing that it might bring meaning to life, he often framed his pictures with edifying verse.

Nam June Paik

@ American Art Museum
Electronic Superhighway: Continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii 1995

When Nam June Paik came to the United States in 1964, the interstate highway system was only nine years old, and superhighways offered everyone the freedom to "see the U.S.A. in your Chevrolet." Walking along the entire length of this installation suggests the enormous scale of the nation that confronted the young Korean artist when he arrived. Neon outlines the monitors, recalling the multicolored maps and glowing enticements of motels and restaurants that beckoned Americans to the open road. The different colors remind us that individual states still have distinct identities and cultures, even in today's information age. LINK American Art Museum

Sandra van Nieuwland has just been eliminated in The Voice of Holland. The sensation of this season is not in the finals, where participants with lesser standing are. It seems also funny as next week, not one of the finalists is number one in the top 30, but Sandra van Nieuwland the actual winner. LINK Dutchpopchart

Cardboard chair

My interest in the Tensegrity sculpture and my experience, have naturally led to my future development in the direction of the same style. Further improving my know-how as a PhD student,
I was looking for applying the Tensegrity style in the furniture design.
In my opinion, this is a new basis of the form-creation, demanded by the logics of the minimalism and the natural approach not only to the sculpture but also to the architecture.

Sinterklaas

@ the Dam Amsterdam

Sinterklaas [sɪntər'klaːs] (or more formally Sint Nicolaas or Sint Nikolaas; Saint Nicolas in French; Sankt Nikolaus in German) is a traditional winter holiday figure still celebrated today in the Low Countries, including the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as French Flanders and Artois. He is also well known in territories of the former Dutch Empire, including Aruba, Suriname, Curaçao, Bonaire, and Indonesia. He is one of the sources of the holiday figure of
Santa Claus in North America.
Although he is usually referred to as Sinterklaas, he is also known as De Goedheiligman (The Good Holy Man), Sint Nicolaas [sɪnt 'nikolaːs] (Saint Nicholas) or simply as De Sint (The Saint). He is celebrated annually on Saint Nicholas' eve (5 December) in the Netherlands or on the morning of 6 December in Belgium and Northern France. Originally, the feast celebrates the name day of Saint Nicholas – patron saint of children, sailors, and the city of Amsterdam, among others.
Sint Nicholas being a bishop and this geographical spread make clear that the feast in this form has a Roman Catholic background.

RON VAN DER ENDE - 'EDGE OF SPACE'

+ GUESTS: BAS LOUTER & BORIS TELLEGEN
@ Ron Mandos Friday 30 november
Gallery open 12.00 – 20.00

Festive Opening EDGE OF SPACE 17.00 – 20.00

RON VAN DER ENDE
EDGE OF SPACE will exhibit the ingenius sculptural works of Ron van der Ende (1965, Rotterdam). Van der Ende specialises in wall-mounted bas-reliefs that he constructs from salvage wood. He utilises the original colour and texture of the wood to create a realistic mosaic representation of a chosen subject. The artist adds perspective to his reliefs to enhace the depth and realism in the work. EDGE OF SPACE is the term for the border of the earth’s atmosphere, the end of our world and the beginning of space

BAS LOUTER

Using charcoal, pastels and ink Bas Louter (1972, Alkmaar) creates portraits in which the face or parts of it are substituted by abstract geometric patterns. The images that Louter uses for these works originate from the entertainment industry; headshots of actors and pop artists. This intervention into these portraits creates a disorientating and empty character.

KELLEY WALKER

Using the potency of advertising media, Kelley Walker’s prints appropriate iconic cultural images, digitally altering them to highlight underlying issues of politics and consumerism. In Black Star Press, Walker presents large-scale billboard-like canvases of racial unrest. Set at 90 degree angles, the images of a white policeman and black youth literally portray a world turned on end. Splattered with abstracted patterns in symbolic white and chocolate, Walker’s gestures mimic violence and contrast, merging ethical corruption and graffiti pop. Printed as a dyptich, Black Star Press is desensitised through repetition, replicating the multiplicity of mass media as vast fields of anesthetised brutality.

Regarding Structure

@ de Zwarte Ruyter
Exhibition runs from 18th of November till December 7th.

An exhibition composed by Sarie Nijboer with works by Gemis Luciani (IT) / Csilla Klenyánszki (HU) / Thomas de Rijk (NL) / Edwin Stolk (NL) and Virginie Mossé (FR).
In search of finding hidden patterns in existing ones this exhibition will take you on a road-trip through an abstract land of geometric signs, constructed dialogues and graphic rhythms. Using existing information to strip, connect and abstract these artists show each a different approach of interpretation. It will be important that we look for patterns that are already in our system to create new possibilities out of it. We have to go back to the basic and look at what we already have. We just need to deal with it differently. LINK de Zwarte Ruyter

Kazimir Malevitsj, 1930-1931
For the first time in the Netherlands, from November 17, 2012 till
June 9 2013, the Drents Museum presents a wide selection of the most impressive and characteristic art created in the Soviet Union during the Stalin dictatorship. The exhibition ‘The Soviet Myth. Socialist Realism 1932 -1960’ contains some 70 paintings idealising the Soviet society. In the new exhibition wing, monumental and dramatic works by artists such as Alexander Deineka, Alexander Samokhvalov, Isaak Brodskij, Arkadi Plastov and Kazimir Malevtsj will be shown. One of the highlights in this exhibition is ‘On peaceful fields‘(1950) by Andrei Mylnikov, measuring an imposing two by four metres. The paintings are on loan from the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg, which houses the largest and most important collection in this field. Complementary to this exhibition, on the first floor of the old building, the museum shows an exposition entitled: ‘Together and Alone. Life in Russia from 1900 till now’, which allows the visitor a view into the life of the ‘ordinary Russians’. LINK Drents Museum

Thomas Walker Luckey

Thomas Walker Luckey, was an artist, sculptor and architect renowned for his one-of-a-kind climbing sculptures. A graduate of the Yale School of Architecture, Tom's fascination with movement and his desire to create positive spaces inspired a diverse portfolio including merry go-rounds, a convertible staircase/slide, and the iconic "Luckey Climbers" that have delighted children and adults alike, in cities across America and the world. Tom Luckey was a visionary, a creative genius, a legendary optimist, an exuberant showboat, and an infamous fun-maker. He was an avid collector of friends, regardless of age; all that mattered was whether you were willing to take a leap with him towards his ultimate goal: superlative joy. Throughout his career, Tom welcomed challenges and was stimulated by obstacles. He embraced uncertainty in his art and adapted to unanticipated hurdles. In 2005, he suffered a tragic accident that left him paralyzed from the shoulders down. This was a change in his life most would find impossible, but Tom was often heard to say that "falling on my head was the best thing that ever happened to me." It was a brave statement that he somehow made believable with his remarkable wit and optimism. Indeed, his career took off and his social life flourished during the final chapters of his life, testament to his remarkable talent and insatiable curiosity.

/ Where Art We Going?

@ NEST today

Each year we reserve a One Nest Stand for students of the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (KABK) and ask them to react on the theme of the past exhibition. In this case, the students will take 'How Art Things?' as a starting point. To reflect on the world they will be part of after their studies, their fear of a rejection by the society we live in, or their hopes for acceptation and fame.

Sayeh Sarfaraz

mémoire d’éléphant (memory of an elephant)
@ galerie antoine ertaskiran

Since 2010, Sayeh Sarfaraz, an artist of Iranian descent, has had eight solo exhibitions in France, Germany, New York and Quebec. She has won numerous awards and is the recipient of five research grants. In her first solo exhibition at galerie antoine ertaskiran, Sarfaraz is presenting a large installation in which toys, drawings and projection serve as a somewhat naïve pictorial language, evoking both her personal history and the political conflict raging in the Middle East. This installation speaks of contemporary art's involvement in social and political issues.

The title of the exhibition, mémoire d'éléphant (memory of an elephant), is a direct reference to the collective memory of the people scarred by violence and dictatorships. Each work is a testament, a witness to the political upheaval. The accumulation of small objects, the repeated use of Persian writing, the miniaturization of everyday life, echoing ancestral Persian traditions: for Sayeh Sarfaraz, they are all ways of interpreting the oppression and suffering endured by the people of that region. Even if the family home seems to be a safe haven, the outside world remains increasingly dangerous.

Maria Lassnig

The Location of Pictures
17.11.2012 - 28.04.2013

Curator: Günther Holler-Schuster

@ Neue Galerie Graz, Upper Floor

Maria Lassnig (b. 1919, Austria) is one of the most important contemporary artists and can be seen as a pioneer in many areas of art today.

Her œuvre reveals a basic problem every person is confronted with. It is the question of the picture, of the visual at a fundamental level, although the visible world can only partially be defined as a location of the visual. More essential in Maria Lassnig's work seems the awareness that the human body represents a medium that generates pictures.

The exhibition in the Neue Galerie Graz presents works by the artist - some of them not yet shown - from all creative periods, an œuvre that traces the developments from Art Informel to representational painting in exemplary fashion. The solo show takes as its theme the processes of turning external reality into images, as well as the manifestation of inner pictures.

This winter de Appel arts centre simultaneously presents solo projects by the Belgian photographer/filmmaker Dirk Braeckman and the British artist Zarina Bhimji. Braeckmans sensitive and large-scale photographs in shades of grey do not tell elaborate stories but are charged with an atmosphere which makes them “tick away like time bombs”, in the words of the author Luc Sante. The suggestive force and narrative potential of images are just as essential for Bhimji, whose latest film Yellow Patch (2011) has its Dutch premiere in de Appel arts centre. LINK de Appel

Raphael

Raphael

From 28 September to 6 January 2013
@ Teylers Museum

In collaboration with Vienna's Albertina Museum, Teylers Museum is proud to present the Netherlands' first exhibition on Raphael (1483 - 1520). With Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael was one of the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance: his Madonnas and Vatican frescos are world famous, and his refined style has been admired and emulated down the centuries.

Paintings on display in the Netherlands for the first time
More than 90 drawings by the master and his school are on display in Haarlem for more than three months.
Due to their fragility, the drawings are rarely exhibited. The inclusion of two paintings from the Uffizi in Florence and the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin is particularly notable. They show us what Raphael's drawings led to. Raphael's paintings have never before been exhibited in the Netherlands. Together, these artworks give an excellent overview of his glittering career.
